In 1998
began their long journey to build affordable and safe
housing for grandparents raising grandchildren.

On June 1, 2005, opened and fifty grandfamilies from
all parts of New York city moved in. The 40 two-bedroom
and 10 three-bedroom apartments offer 24 hour front desk
service, a library, community room, green roof and a
state-of -the art Center.

The Center offers a wide range of services: support
groups, counseling, case management,educational
workshops and seminars, homework assistance,
recreational activities, legal services and a summer
day camp.

GFA's goal is to assist each grandparent with reaching
her/his full potential as grandparents raising
grandchildren and to enable the grandchildren to gain
the emotional and educational tools for success.

Since its opening, GFA has been recognized nationally
and internationally as a model for intergenerational
housing.
